The 11th Annual Tamika Reggae Awards is scheduled to be presented on Friday, March 19, 1999, at 8:00 p.m., at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, in New York City. This is the second time North America's premier Reggae award show, is taking place at this land marked venue. The 8th presentation was held there on May 2, 1996.

Among the nominees are: Virgin Records recent signee BEENIE MAN with eight (8) nominations, including (a) Record of The Year for "Boogie Down" (b) Album of the Year for "Many Moods of Moses" (c) DJ of The Year-International, and (d) Video of The Year for his massive hit "Who Am I." The year's new sensation MR. VEGAS, picks up four (4) nominations including: (a) New Artist of The Year, (b) Record of The Year for "Heads High" and (d) Most Promising Artist of The Year. BUJU BANTON got five (5) nominations: (a) Songwriter of The Year, (a) The Nelson Mandela Award(For Most Conscious Lyrics) and (d) DJ of The Year-International. WYCLEF JEAN of The Fugees' fame, picks up a nomination in the category Crossover Artist/Record of The Year for his combination with SPRAGGA BENZ on the single "Chicken Head." SPRAGGA also picks up another nomination for Record of The Year for his single "She Nuh Ready Yet." Other known Rap artists that got nominations include MOBB DEEP and RAPPIN' NOYD for their combination with BOUNTY KILLER on his hit single "Deadly Zone." The Killer himself earns five (5) nominations including (a) Album of The Year for "Next Millennium" (b) Record of The Year for "Can't Believe Mi Eyes" and (d) DJ of The Year - International.

Other nominees include, but not limited to: BERES HAMMOND, KYMANI MARLEY DEVONTE/TANTO METRO, FIONA, A.R.P., CARLTON LIVINGSTON, RED FOX, HALF PINT, LUCIANO, THE INNOCENT CREW, JAHMALI, GLEN WASHINGTON, LADY G, MORGAN HERITAGE, CHRISSY D, SHINEHEAD, YANKEE B, THE ABYSSINIANS, SISTER CAROL, FRANKIE PAUL, SIZZLA, ALPHA BLONDY, and NIKISHA LINDO.

The nominees for the prestigious Bob Marley Lifetime Achievement Award (For Outstanding Contribution to Reggae Music) are: (a) ERNIE SMITH - songwriter and recording artist, (b) BUNNY LEE - record producer, (c) FREDDY McGREGOR - recording artist, (d) SLY DUNBAR/ROBBIE SHAKESPEAR - musicians/record producers, and (e) GEORGE GOLDING - veteran artist manager/road manager.

Nominees are chosen from the year's end Top 100 Chart compiled from the weekly New York Top 20 Reggae Chart, which is compiled from sales reported from various local record outlets in the tri-state area. In non-sales categories, a nominating committee of writers, producers and other Reggae luminaries is asked to submit nominees. Ballots are then made available to the voting public at various locations like clubs, record stores, and various business places in the boroughs.

As the new millennium approaches, the Tamika Reggae Awards moves into cyberspace! For the first time, voting is accepted via the Internet. Reggae fans the world over, now have the opportunity to participate in what is becoming a global event. They can now cast their votes for their favorite artists by visiting the Tamika Reggae Awards website at www.iriebeat.com. The deadline for casting votes is Friday, March 12, 1999, at midnight (EST).

The year's top entertainers will be in attendance at the 11th Annual Tamika Reggae Awards on Friday, March 19, 1999, at 8:00 p.m. at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.
