Bob Marley star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
On June 22, 2000 it was announced by the
Associated Press that Reggae legend Bob Marley will receive a star on the
Hollywood Walk Of Fame in the year 2001. Barbara Barabino of Ragga Muffins
Productions is the star sponsor and implemented the application process for
Bob’s star over 10 years ago. Petitions signed by thousands of fans and
letters endorsed by stars such as Lauryn Hill, Ky-Mani Marley, among many others
were sent to the committee over the past 10 years, finally Barbara Barabino was
notified by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, June 21st that
Marley will be receiving this long awaited award. The ceremony will be on
Bob’s birthday, Tuesday, February 6, 2001, at 11:30 A.M. at 7080 Hollywood
Blvd., Hollywood, California.
Bob Marley
has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, named Artist of the
Century by Time Magazine and now he will be receiving the long awaited Walk of
Fame Star. He is among 23 inductees that will also be receiving their stars.
Sponsors pay $15,000 and promise that their celebrity, if living, will appear
for the ceremony. In Bob’s case, some of the Marley family will be invited
to attend the ceremonies, including his mother, Cedella Marley Booker, his son,
Ky-Mani Marley, and singer, Lauryn Hill. Barbara Barabino of Ragga Muffins
Productions says: "I had this dream over 10 years ago and basically wondered why
Bob didn’t have such a recognition. Nevertheless, I started the process,
and this was my third application to nominate Brother Bob. I made the
applications, circulated petitions, procured letters and finally it happened, I
was notified that Bob would be getting his star. I feel this is perfect timing,
as 2001 is the 20th anniversary of our Annual Bob Marley Festival, it’s
special and special things should happen that have never happened before. This
star has been long awaited, and I am extremely elated that it has
happened."
"I salute Reggae music, all
the artists in the industry, and the many fans who come out every year in
celebration of Bob’s birthday. As Bob’s message lives on in us, we
too advocate social unity and will "emancipate ourselves from mental slavery",
one of the most significant and challenging statements left to us by Brother
Bob. Bob’s music has and will continue to touch the lives of millions
around the globe."
Barbara Barabino of
Ragga Muffins Productions and Moss Jacobs Presents are the producers of the
Annual Bob Marley Festival in Long Beach, California. Barbara states "Many
thanks to Moss Jacobs for helping to make our dream come true and for assisting
us in taking our annual event to a level which is described as a masterpiece.
Over the past 20 years, there have been multitudes of artists, both local and
international who have brought their talents and spirits together in celebration
of the birthday of the legend known as Bob Marley. Bob lives on in our hearts,
the messages in his music shall forever be a cornerstone and upliftment for our
lives."
